The 30 Day Song Challenge - Day 1 - Your Favourite Song
Posted by James at 9:48 PM 0 commentsNaturally the first one is a tricky one. I have thought long and hard however, and at the time of posting, my favourite song would have to be this beauty:
No I'm just kidding, I'm still trying to work it out. I have an entire playlist dedicated to songs I deem to be worthy of constant repetition, those that have certain chords or riffs that send magic through me like an auditory orgasm. It is called my "Oh God" playlist. No really, look.
This playlist is full of potential candidates for today's request. However at this point, I must go with:
Some notes I feel I must make to further qualify my decision. Firstly, you must understand that there were a great many contender. This was not a light decision. I shall not mention names as I have decided to do this properly, which is why you are not trudging through a list of my Top 50 Tracks of the Ever.
Secondly, Giant Drag are not my favourite band, though damn if they aren't high up the list. The point however was favourite song, and it just so happens that my favourite song was not created by my favourite band. Note that by created I mean this specific carnation. This leads me nicely on to my last, and most important point.
I know it is a cover. I very much enjoy the original Chris Isaak version. The guitar is gorgeous, the vocals are like deep, sensuous velvet, the lyrics themselves are powerful and evocative, and it is an all round fantastic song. However this version I first listened to (and indeed was the first version I listened to) during, and thus I associate it with, a very emotional and memorable time in my late childhood. Because of that, this version simply pushes all the right places that Chris just barely misses. It is part Chris's lyrics and melody, and part emotional background that causes this version to come out on top. It strikes my body like an ocean wave and washes back over me like the returning same. Whenever I need to become laudator temporis acti, I break out this song. Whenever I need to remind myself of certain times past, or gain perspective for the present and future, I sit back, click play and let the dirty guitar render me peaceful.
In conclusion I do declare Wicked Game by Giant Drag to be my personal and entirely subjectively favourite song.
And with this post, I do start the 30 Day Song Challenge! I hope, o readers mine that you will enjoy reading it as much I shall enjoy listening and writing it.
